The Lanzarote Island Council approved this Thursday in plenary session an extraordinary credit modification, financed with new income, to include an amount of 2,013,392.57 euros in the Annex of Subsidies and in the Strategic Plan of Subsidies of the Transport Area to Arrecife Bus SL. This measure allows to offset the cost of the 100% discount on multi-trip passes and tickets for public land transport on the island, that is, intercity buses.

As stated by the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, “the island corporation allocates these financial resources with the aim of guaranteeing free bus tickets for Canarian residents. It is essential to maintain this investment to improve and facilitate the accessibility and sustainability of public transport on our island.”

For his part, the Minister of Transport, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, underlines the positive impact of this measure. “Public transport is a fundamental part of planning sustainable and efficient mobility. With this subsidy, we ensure that residents can continue to enjoy the service free of charge, encouraging its use and reducing dependence on private vehicles.”

Record number of bus passengers

Inter-island public land transport for passengers in Lanzarote, which is the direct responsibility of the Cabildo, experienced a significant increase of 15% in 2024 compared to 2023, going from 6.6 million users to more than 7.6 million passengers with which it closed on December 31.

Regarding the payment method for travellers, the Canary Islands Resident Bonus experienced a 32.78% increase in sales, exceeding 4.7 million travellers in 2024, while in 2023 there were just over 3.5 million users with this bonus.
