The Blue Flag has been awarded to Las Cucharas beach in Costa Teguise on Wenesday during a ceremony presided over by the mayor of Teguise, Juan Pedro Hernández, the Councillor for Tourism, Oswaldo Betancourt and President of the Nautical North Lanzarote, Bernard Gaziello. This flag comes to the beach of Costa Teguise as a symbol of excellence of nautical tourism in the municipality and of commitment to the development of water sports.

This quality mark was awarded by the National Tourism Minister, Antonio Bernabe, and the president of the National Nautical Association , Joan Campolier during the last tourism fair, Fitur, held in Madrid.

The flag-raising has reinforced the island’s strong sporting identity and the Tourist Board in Costa Teguise has been presented with the European seal of approval for Lanzarote as a Sports Destination.

Lanzarote as a top European Sports Destination highlights a schedule that includes holding some 30 events in 13 sports disciplines that are planned throughout the year and, among them four world championships. The schedule has been designed to attract more tourists and sportsmen to Lanzarote, so both participants and spectators can enjoy the events.

Earlier this year the above schedule began to be distributed by all Tourespaña European offices, tour operators, agencies, etc. Later this year, the Trade Promotion Society, plans to present the calendar for 2012, given the great interest aroused by the 2011 sports schedule.

This project can not be imposed, and needs the collaboration of the private and public sectors, to make the most of this business opportunity.
