The population of Lanzarote has broken records. Residents on the island have increased by more than 2,000 people during the last twelve months, as published in a report Canarias 7.
This increase places Lanzarote at 156,000 residents, a figure never reached on the island, which must be added to the 70,000 average tourists on the island. Precisely the good progress of tourism has meant that many people, especially from the peninsula but also from other countries of the European Union, have decided to come to work in Lanzarote, a place that despite all the majority of residents qualify as privileged to reside for the high environmental quality, climate and the existing citizen security.
All the municipalities of the island have grown in this last year with the exception of San Bartolomé, which remains practically the same as it was 12 months ago. Arrecife with 63,200 citizens continues to be the most populated municipality with 1,800 more neighbors, followed by Teguise with 22,500 residents, and San Bartolomé with 21,200. In fourth place by number of inhabitants is the tourist municipality of Tías with 20,500 neighbors, which is followed by Yaiza with 17,500 residents with significant growth in the last 12 months.
Tinajo, with 6,200 residents, and Haría, with 5,200 inhabitants, are the least inhabited of the island. These are non-tourist municipalities where there are no large residential areas (Playa Honda type) and which have a more rural character.
