As of today, face masks must once again be worn in health centres, hospitals and clinics on the Canaries.

The Canarian Health Service announced the measure yesterday, after a peak in Covid and flu infections that has seen a 41% rise in Covid cases on the islands in recent weeks. That peak is expected to increase as the consequences of Christmas and New Year parties become evident.

Flu has also returned with 1,255 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on the Canaries and, unlike Covid, it mainly affects young children.  Health officials recommend that anyone with flu symptoms take precautionary measures, especially around vulnerable people such as the elderly.

The face mask rule only applies to centres of primary attention (hospitals, health centres, private clinics etc), and is not applicable in chemists, on public transport etc. The health service say that the mask rule is temporary, while the current rise in cases persists.
