The Government of the Canary Islands has decided this Thursday, March 12, with the coordination of the Departments of Health and Education, Universities, Culture and Sports, the suspension of the teaching activity and the closure of the educational centers of the Canary Islands, including those of Lanzarote, for 14 days starting tomorrow, Friday, March 13.

The decision affects all educational levels (Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary, Vocational Training, Adult Education, Official Language Schools and Universities) and all centers (public, public and private). Suspension of all extracurricular activities is also established.

As it has advanced from the Executive, every day the necessary decisions will be taken to contain the COVID-19 virus. In this case, a preventive and exceptional measure is adopted to protect the most vulnerable population groups (sick, health personnel and the elderly). Schoolchildren are not a group at risk, but they can act as transmitters of the virus. Therefore, it is requested that, as far as possible, they limit their external activity to what is essential and, especially, avoid contact with the elderly and sick.

The Government of the Canary Islands has indicated that, depending on the scenario that arises regarding the evolution of the COVID-10 virus, new measures may be adopted in the coming days.

The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, will participate on Saturday in the meeting by videoconference with all the autonomous presidents, called by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. After that meeting, the chief executive of the Canary Islands will appear to report on the latest measures taken.
