The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has reacted on social media to the anti-tourism graffiti in the city.
The mayor points out that, on the one hand, “we have painted that wall on multiple occasions, most recently last week. We have activated a plan to remove graffiti from our public spaces, street furniture, and walls in Arrecife. To move forward as a city, we must all work together and be responsible. Everyone.”
He also talks about the underlying meaning of the graffiti. “Lanzarote emerged from poverty thanks to tourism. Thousands of families live, we live on this island, thanks to tourism and the people who visit us every year. Deciding what we want for the future of the island is debated through dialogue and participation. Not by “staining” the city, the island… Graffiti is unnecessary when those who spread it don’t engage in dialogue. It damages the forms.”
