Lanzarote is a world-class tourist destination, there’s no doubt about it. We’ve grown in recent years to a spectacular 3.3 million visitors by 2024. This figure doesn’t include the number of people arriving on cruise ships.
Last season, up to 600,000 people visited us by boat, docking at the Port of Los Mármoles . The island is consolidating its position as one of the most popular winter destinations, and the seasons are also getting longer, meaning they start earlier and end later. Even during the summer, boats continue to arrive, something that didn’t happen before.
Cruise passengers have a highly attractive profile, as they spend medium-to-high amounts of money at their destination, consume hospitality and retail services, and, above all, do not use tourist berths, so they do not expand the construction of hotels or apartments, nor do they require the services derived from them.
Among the detractors of this tourism system are groups or certain activists who believe that cruise ships add visitors and, in the long run, overcrowd and saturate the island, which calls for a review of the tourism model.
A new range of opportunities is now opening up from the south of the island, as it appears that the first boutique cruise ships could arrive at the port of Playa Blanca this fall/winter season. These are small vessels with quality services and a more affluent clientele.
Today at Objetivo Lanzarote, we take an in-depth look at how our island is coping with the growing cruise industry and how it can benefit or harm our interests.
