I was disappointed to hear of the cancellation of the Autumn course due to (it would seem) shortage of funds that subsidise the course, within Tias council.

The Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo has been organizing Spanish Courses for foreigners on Lanzarote since 1999, year of its creation on the island. The courses are organized in collaboration with the Town Council of Tías, the Lanzarote Cabildo and the Lanzarotean Tourist Business Assosiation ASOLAN. It is a non profit making institution committed to the teaching of Spanish to non Spanish speaking residents and hence their integration in daily, cultural and labour activities of the island.

I attended the course myself for 3 terms when I arrived on the island in 2004 and I found it a great introduction to learning spanish. Let’s hope this is just a temporary set-back and that classes return to normal in 2012.
